'Healthy Doctors Better Medicine' Conference, Adelaide, 2009
The 'Healthy Doctors Better Medicine' Conference took place in Adelaide during Thursday 3rd September to Saturday 5th September 2009. The keynote speakers were:
Professor Erica Frank, who has a major interest in doctors health research and is the founder of the Healthy Doc = Healthy Patient Project.
Professor Geoff Riley, Professor of Rural & Remote Medicine at the University of Western Australia. He worked in rural general practice in the 1980s before training as a psychiatrist. He is highly regarded as a teacher and has a special interest in care of doctors and their families.
The sub themes of the conference were:
- Personal approaches to staying well
- The Healthy workplace - corporate models
- Adjusting to the stages in a medical career
- Issues for the medical employee
- Managing Doctor-patients
- The health of medical students/young doctors

An international panel session discussing the challenges of working in a changing professional environment, including the effects of organisational change on doctors’ health and the difficulties of developing an effective support system in a shifting professional landscape.
Taking a reality check on complaints and litigation
Complaints and litigation processes can be extremely stressful experiences, for both doctor and complainant. This session looks to understand the impact on the individuals involved as well as finding ways to help, and looking at experiences from Canada, US, New Zealand, South Africa and UK.

Closing keynote - A fine balance - achieving work/life harmony
Stress in an inherent factor in a doctors’ life. Using a biopsychosocial approach, Professor Gautam will outline the main causes of stress in medicine.
